Saints and Blesseds from Bologna (women)

Tour dedicated to the figures of Santa Caterina de’ Vigri and Blessed Elena Duglioli

Appointment in Via Tagliapietre, 21, Sanctuary of Corpus Domini

Duration of the itinerary approximately 2h30

Bologna boasts of several prominent female personalities. Today we will get to know Santa Caterina de’ Vigri and the Blessed Elena Duglioli, two prominent persons who lived in the middle of the Renaissance and who left important traces in our city.

Santa Caterina was born in Bologna, but spent several years in the luxury of the Este court in Ferrara. After several troubled events, she decided to adhere to the religious Rule of Saint Clare of Assisi. In 1456, after an insistent invitation from the citizens and the civil and religious authorities, Caterina returned to Bologna to establish the Corpus Domini Monastery, of which she became abbess until her death on 9th March 1463. Venerated during her lifetime for her charismatic virtues, she was canonised in 1712 and today she is co-patron of Bologna. Visit to the Corpus Domini Monastery, which contains the Chapel of the Saint, built to keep her incorrupt body: she appears seated in her Poor Clare clothes and seems to be talking to pilgrims. With a pleasant walk through the charming alleys of the centre, you reach the Basilica of San Giovanni in Monte, the favourite place of prayer of Blessed Elena Duglioli. Born in Bologna in 1472 into an illustrious family, she showed an early propensity for the hidden life, prayer and assiduous commitment to the service of others. Although she wanted to enter the Corpus Domini Monastery, she was given in marriage to a Bolognese notary, with whom she lived in an exemplary way and, following the death of her husband, she also became an exemplary widow. Thanks to her patronage, the city of Bologna received an important work of art: Santa Cecilia, a painting by Raphael, which presently hangs in the National Art Gallery (Pinacoteca). Visit to the Church of San Giovanni in Monte, the ancient Church of Monte Olivo, which has always been linked to the symbolism of the holy places of Jerusalem. Inside, among countless works of art, there is also the chapel that houses the incorrupt body of the Blessed Elena.
